Karolinska Institutet

Karolinska University Hospital (Karolinska) and the university Karolinska Institutet (KI) have different roles, which might be perceived as confusing. We share the brand, have complementary mandates, our facilities are located next to each other, and we work closely on many levels. We drive clinical research and perform clinical studies together, many of our staff hold joint positions, and our management exchanges knowledge and strategic plans together. Our work is well-integrated into each other and is also one of the reasons for our cutting-edge expertise and contribution to research.  
 
The most crucial factor distinguishing Karolinska from KI is that we take care of patients, are responsible for educating healthcare professionals, and perform intervention trials. KI manages basic research and is responsible for pre-graduate education. We also have different owners and hence also, different legal frameworks. In Sweden, our counties control healthcare, while the government oversees the universities.  
 
Even though we have different missions, those are complementary to each other, and we also share similar visions. Our vision is “to cure and relieve tomorrow what no one can cure and relieve today,” and KI:s vision is “to advance knowledge about life and strive towards better health for all.” Karolinska and KI have a joint ambition to help people and develop the healthcare field.
